Visitors to the Algarve are being lured to the end of the world this month to participate in new festivals in Sagres, the most westerly point of Europe.
Sagres will be playing host to two events, with both utilising the unique location of the Sagres fort as well as the historical town itself to host the diverse entertainment programme.
On June 9 and 10, visitors to Sagres will be able to enjoy the first Maravilhas de Sagres, Marvels of Sagres, medieval festival which will be incorporating the unveiling of a new statue of Infante Dom Henrique, Henry the Navigator, the famed Portuguese explorer who set out on many expeditions from Sagres.
Sagres fort is the venue of two exciting events this month. |
Those participating in the two-day festival will be treated to shows of jousting and falconry displays, medieval and renaissance music and dancing, fireworks, historical re-enactments, world music performances and numerous food and drink stalls.
Organisers of the festival expect to attract more than 10,000 visitors to Sagres during the event which is free to enter and will be open between 2pm and midnight each day.
Reggae nights
The diversity of the fort as an events location will be demonstrated on June 12 when the Sagres Sunset Fest will take place at the spectacular location (see the Algarve Resident edition May 29) before moving to the streets of Sagres on June 13.
Reggae, funk and ska acts will be performing at the festival including Spanish trio The Pepper Pots and Portuguese bands Oioai and Funkd’Jam.
Entry to the festival costs 12 euros if bought at the door or 10 euros if reserved via email from [email protected]
