Festas most lavish and expensive ever

THIS SUMMER’ Festas de Lisboa will be bigger and better than ever, and aim to draw in thousands of tourists.

With a budget of more than three million euros, Lisbon Câmara is to stage various musical concerts, plays and shows in the Variety Theatre at Parque Mayer, while the World Cup will be beamed from huge open-air screens throughout the city.

Parque Mayer will host a Hip-Hop Festival (June 5-7), the Emerge Festival dedicated to new Portuguese rock bands (June 13-15), the ForUJazz Festival (June 19-21) and the Rotas e Rituais Festival dedicated to world music (June 26-28).

The annual and colourful Popular Marches will make their way down Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade on June 12 from 9.30pm, while Rossio Square will be the stage of two Italian spectacles, Gigli di Nola on June 10 at 9pm and Abbattimento do Obelisco on June 11, also at 9pm.

Cape Verdean diva, Cesária Évora, will perform in Belém on July 2, while the African Festival will run from July 6 to 9 at the same location. All of the various events are free, except the Fado Festival, which takes place between June 2 and 24 at St. Jorge’s Castle.
