Ferragudo is paying tribute to its patron saint Nossa Senhora da Conceição on August 14 and 15, at the centre stage of the two days of festa at the foot of Forte de São João in Largo da Angrinha (car park near Praia Grande).
Visitors to Ferragudo will be entertained with live music and dancing and have the opportunity to try some of the fishermen’s favourite meals at the stand run by the APF (Associação de Pescadores de Ferragudo e Afins), as well as buy some souvenir T-shirts (new design) and raffle tickets to win prizes donated by local businesses.
Fiona Almeida from AFP said: “Take this opportunity and visit the fishermen and their families, taste some truly wonderful dishes fresh from the sea, and learn more about the ancient heritage of the fishing industry in Ferragudo and how it provides for the local families, as well as all the visitors.”
On Thursday evening at 6pm, the highlight of the festivities is a procession from the church carrying the icon of Nossa Senhora da Conceição down to Ferragudo quayside where the statue will be boarding one of the local fishing vessels to participate in a parade of the local boats around the bay followed by a blessing by the local priest in front of the Salva Vidas (life-guard house) in Ferragudo.
