Over 1,000 people are expected to take part in Ferragudo’s celebrations of its local patroness – Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of Conception) – on Tuesday, August 15.
Musical entertainment will precede the religious festivities at the village’s riverside, starting on Saturday, August 12 and taking place every night until Tuesday.
There will be stalls selling food and drinks and musical shows every evening, with the performers including Pedro Silva (August 12), Algarve Jazz Orchestra with Domingos Caetano (August 13), Brasa Doirada and DJ Boiças (August 14) and Ricardo & Idalécia and Tânia (August 15).
The usual procession will take place at 6pm on August 15 and will be accompanied by the Banda Filarmónica Portimonense (Portimonense Philharmonic Band). It will begin on land at the local church, from where the image of the patroness will be taken to the riverside where it will be transferred to a boat at the Ferragudo ISN station (Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos). It will then continue towards Praia Grande, where it will return to land and make its way back to the lifeguard station, where a blessing of the local boats and fishermen will take place.
After the blessing, the procession will proceed along Rua Infante Santo, continuing its route to the local church.
At night, a big party will take place in downtown Ferragudo, featuring a fair and the participation of various guest artists.
The festivities are organised by Ferragudo Parish Council, with logistical support from the Lagoa Council and additional support from several local associations.
