A four-day celebration to honour the patron saint of Ferragudo will begin on Friday, August 12 with a number of religious festivities.
First up is the ‘triduum’ celebration, which will take place throughout the three days at the local church (Igreja Paroquial).
The event continues on Saturday and Sunday (August 13-14) with a round of night-time entertainment at Angrinha beach.
But the highpoint of the event, the procession, is scheduled for Monday, August 15.
It will begin at 6pm from the church, accompanied by the Banda Filarmónica Portimonense. A statue of Nossa Senhora is carried down to the village and then taken onboard one of the many fishing boats for short trip out to sea. Once it is back ashore, a blessing of the local fishing boats and fishermen takes place before the procession continues towards the main Dª Leonor square and then finally winds its way back to church.
The celebrations end at 9pm with another party on Angrinha beach.
“We are aware that this party reflects the culture of the people of Ferragudo, and thus we have to make every effort to organise it and keep a decades-long tradition alive,” said a statement from Ferragudo parish council.~
