Father and son “in critical condition” after Olhão house fire

A father and son are in “critical condition” at Faro Hospital following a fire that “totally destroyed” their home in Olhão yesterday (November 10).

The 74-year-old older man, said to be “visually impaired,” was rescued from the blazing property by his son who arrived home from work shortly after the fire took hold, a witness told TVI.

The father suffered burns to 70% of his body while his 40-year-old son suffered burns to his face and inhalation injuries, a source from the National Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEM) told Lusa news agency.

The fire broke out in the 16 de Junho neighbourhood shortly before 2.50pm.

Quick action from local firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading.

According to TVI, the council services are trying to find alternative accommodation for the men once they are released from hospital.

Meantime, the cause of the fire is being investigated.
