Fatacil fairground to grow as council buys Mitsubishi plot

Council had been eyeing plot “for a long time”

Lagoa Council has purchased a 9,000sqm plot of land previously owned by car manufacturer Mitsubishi in a bid to expand the town’s Fatacil fairground.

The €347,000 deal was completed a few days before the start of the 2022 edition of Fatacil, the council said.

“Lagoa has wanted to buy the former Mitsubishi plot for a long time, believing it to be a strategic and crucial acquisition to ensure the natural expansion of the fairground and development of Fatacil,” the council added.

The new land will allow organisers to use the existing facilities to provide a new multiuse pavilion for events all year long and also provide a new area for personalised stands which cannot currently take part in the fair because they cannot exhibit in outdoor areas.

The fairground will also gain two new entrances, which the council recognises was one of the criticisms directed at the venue, making it easier for visitors as well as vehicles to assist the installation and disassembly of stalls to enter.

“This was a deal that we had wanted for a long time, which ensures the future of Fatacil,” said Lagoa Mayor Luís Encarnação, adding that it will also help the fairground host other events throughout the year.
