Fast swimmer

A turtle released back into the wild off the coast of the Algarve 11 months ago has covered 10,500 kilometres in the ocean (see Algarve Resident August 20 edition).

Calantha the common turtle (Caretta caretta) has now reached the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Calantha was returned to the ocean after four years of preparation at the Zoomarine rehabilitation centre. Biologists attached a transmitter to its shell, allowing the Zoomarine team to follow Calantha’s movements.
