It is one of Portugal’s favourite summertime snacks and is the star of a gastronomic festival starting on Thursday, May 23, and running until Sunday (May 26) at Jardim da Alameda João de Deus in Faro.
Entitled Festa do Caracol (Snail Festival), the event aims to promote and showcase the Mediterranean cuisine and culture – namely the snail, which in the Algarve is cooked in boiling salty water with oregano and is usually served with a cold beer and toast.
There will also be stalls with street food, homemade ice cream, sweets, drinks and handicraft. Several local musical acts will also be performing.
The festival, which is free to attend, will be open between 5pm and midnight from Thursday to Saturday and between 7pm and midnight on Sunday.
