A new passenger terminal is due to be built on Ilha do Farol by 2025
Faro Council has announced that it has taken over the management of the beach and docking areas of Ilha do Farol and Ilha da Barreta (also known as Ilha Deserta).
In a statement to the press, the council said that the paperwork making the transfer of management from the Sines and Algarve Port Administration (APS) to the local authority official was signed on February 3.
“With the signing of this document, the council follows APS as the licensing entity of the existing commercial establishments in these areas and as the managing entity of the docking areas existing in Barreta-Deserta and Ilha do Farol,” the council said.
However, APS will remain responsible for the management and maintenance of Faro’s eastern and western breakwaters and has also vowed to carry out improvements at the passenger terminal on Ilha do Faro by the end of May, followed by the construction of a new terminal by the end of 2025.
Faro mayor Rogério Bacalhau has celebrated the deal, saying it will pave the way for a “closer management of these areas which are integrated in the State’s public hydrological domain.”
