Faro offers new direct flight to Madrid

A NEW direct flight to Madrid from Faro is now being offered by Iberia’s regional airline, Air Nostrum. The much welcomed route is operating four times per week – Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays – until September 29, after which a new timetable will be announced.

The one hour flight is offered on a full service basis (meal and refreshments included) and is operated by a 50 seater CRJ-200 aircraft.

This new service is of great strategic importance for the Algarve, enabling the region to attract more visitors from its neighbouring country and particularly from Madrid, a city that boasts a population of five million people. The Spanish market is vital for the Algarve and, until now, the travel options available have not been very attractive. Visitors have needed to either drive from Madrid or fly via Lisbon to reach the Algarve.

It is expected that the new direct route will have a significant effect on the Algarve’s golf industry because, although the sport is popular in Madrid, the Spanish capital is short of golf courses. The Algarve is famous the world over for its superior standard of courses and, therefore, the easy flight connection should prove a very attractive proposition. Furthermore, the new route comes as welcome news for those living in the Algarve who would like to enjoy a city break in Madrid.
