National charity event Corrida Sempre Mulher, which is a race against breast cancer, will be held in Faro on June 20.
This event encourages women from across the Algarve to be involved in a non-competitive race to raise funds for the Portuguese association that supports women with breast cancer, Associação Portuguesa de Apoio à Mulher com Cancro da Mama (see the Algarve Resident edition, August 29, 2008).
Race organiser Luís Lopes told the Algarve Resident: “After the feedback from our event in Tavira last year, we decided to move the race to Faro because it is more central and easier for participants to get to.” He added: “Faro Câmara is supporting us in terms of logistics, with the lighting, sound and stage.”
The 6km race, which will for the first time be held at night from 9pm, will start and end in the Manuel Bívar garden in Faro city.
“Everyone is welcome to take part. In the past, participants have ranged in age from babies in push chairs to people over the age of 90,” he said. “Men are welcome to take part but must register with a female friend or relative.”
Before the event, participants will be able to warm up with a joint outdoor aerobics class and relax after the event with a stretching class.
The fee for registration to take part in this event is 10 euros which includes a t-shirt, rucksack and gifts from sponsors and the money will be donated to the breast cancer foundation for the project to build new headquarters in Lisbon.
Registration can be completed online via the event website at www.corridasempremulher.com, which is due to be translated into English. “Online registration will remain open until we reach 2,500 participants. If there are still spaces available, we will accept registrations on the event day itself, however these will cost 12 euros,” said Luís Lopes.
The Algarve Resident is the official English-speaking media sponsor of the event.
Other sponsors of the event are Jornal do Algarve, SportZone, OK Teleseguros, Europecar, Águas de Monchique and Hotel de Faro.
