Faro findings

Archaeological findings unearthed by Faro cathedral brought work to install public lighting in the area to a halt.

Câmara workers digging a section in the Largo da Sé square found a structure which the director of the municipal museum believes could be the foundations of an Episcopal building from the 16th century, when the Bishop was transferred from Silves to Faro.

Dália Paulo from the museum, which coordinates the archaeology services at Faro Câmara, said several houses around the cathedral had been purchased by the clergy then. “The buildings may have been destroyed by the earthquake in 1755,” she said.
