Faro aces

Top seed Pedro Sousa celebrated only the second ATP Futures victory of his career in Faro on Sunday.

The 23-year-old world No317 who reached the final of a similar event in Murcia the previous week beat Britain’s Matthew Short in the quarters before overcoming Italian second seed Claudio Grassi 6-4, 7-6 in the title match.

He later partnered Gonçalo Falcao in the doubles event to complete a clean sweep by defeating the German-Hungarian pair Steven Moneke and Denes Lukacs 7-5, 6-4. Sousa is not competing in this week’s second in a series of three Algarve capital futures for which Britain’s Daniel Smethurst is seeded fourth behind Belgian Alexandre Folie, Sunday’s runner-up Grassi and Slovakia’s Andrej Martin.

Meanwhile Faro’s Portuguese No1 Rui Machado is joining the world’s elite at Indian Wells for one of the biggest tournaments outside the four Grand Slam events starting this weekend.
