Farense: scoreless stalemate

Farense’s weekend visit to Vila Nova de Famalicão ended in a goalless draw with neither side able to break the stalemate.

After a balanced first-half from both teams which failed to produce significant scoring opportunities, Farense defender André Pinto was sent off at the 50th minute after receiving his second yellow card of the match.

The ensuing free kick just outside Farense’s box could have given Famalicão the lead as Rúben Vinagre almost netted what would have been a stunning goal for Jorge Silas’ squad.

However, the home side was unable to take advantage of the extra man for the most part and failed to consistently threaten Rafael Defendi.

In fact, Licá could have scored the winning goal for the Algarve-side eight minutes away from the final whistle but saw his shot miss the mark by just a few centimetres.

After the match, Farense manager Jorge Costa said that the final score was “positive” for his team.

“There were two different halves. In the first half, we played very well, pressed Famalicão and created some trouble. I don’t recall one scoring chance for Famalicão. We were well-prepared, but André’s red card completely changed the course of the game,” he said, admitting that Farense had to adapt to the circumstances.

“With all that happened, we earned a positive point,” he said.

Farense, now sitting at the 14th spot with 19 points, will travel this weekend to Vila do Conde to face 10th-placed Rio Ave on Sunday at 8pm.
