Shopping heaven
In our opinion, a trip to Faro is wasted if you failed to indulge in a spot of spending. Faro’s main shopping area is in the heart of town, along Rua de Santo António and Rua Francisco Gomes.
You’ll find designer shopping next to hardware stores, high street names next to tiny boutiques – heaven! If you’re looking for the mall experience, try Forum Algarve, where you are sure to find what you want among the hundreds of shops.
Winding down and hotting up
Once you’ve spent up, why not take a drive over to Ilha de Faro and relax on the golden sand of Praia de Faro as the sun goes down? The beach is lined with bars and cafés and, as it’s close to the airport, you can enjoy a bit of plane spotting too.
Still going? Faro is home to the region’s biggest university campus, so the city has a vibrant nightlife, centred mainly around Rua do Prior and in the narrow alleys off Rua Conselheiro Bívar and Rua Infante Dom Henrique. Clubs get going around midnight and stay open until dawn – Enjoy!
Summer in the city
The international music festival (Festival Nacional de Música do Algarve) runs from May to July and includes performances in Faro and the city’s famous open-air street entertainment (Animação de Rua) runs from July to September.
PDM VERDICT: A trip to the Algarve’s capital will really open your eyes. There’s history, great food, fantastic shopping and a relaxing beach nearby.
