Planning for Scruffts, under the chairmanship of Martin Hepton, is well underway.
All eighteen Judging Classes have now been sponsored and the cups, rosettes and prizes ordered.
This year the Pedigree classes will be judged by Georgie Saffin, who is an International and Portuguese Kennel Club judge, while Marilyn Albergaria from Lisbon will judge the Mixed Breed classes.
As in previous years, the judges will give their time and expertise free of charge, for which the organisers are very grateful.
The idea of asking the public to judge two classes is proving very popular and these classes, the People’s Favourite Dog (Mixed Breed) and the People’s Favourite Dog (Pedigree) will run immediately before lunch so that the volunteers will have time to count the votes during the lunch break.
Kay Siddall from Albufeira sent us this picture of two-year-old Izzy, a rescue dog. Kay said: “She was found dumped in a rubbish bin at five days old missing her tail. With bottle feeding and huge amounts of love she has grown into the most adorable tempered and loving friend anyone could wish for. I love this particular photograph of her curled up sleeping, she looks so peaceful and of course cute. When awake she has so much energy. it’s hard to keep up with her, but she always finds time to come for plenty of cuddles. I must admit my partner and I spoil her a little but she deserves it. She provides us with love and laughter everyday…what more could anyone ask from a friend?”. |
Immediately after lunch both classes will be invited back into the ring for the announcement of the winners and presentation of prizes.
It is hoped there will be several face-painters (volunteers, please!) to paint the faces of young entrants to Class 11, Dog and Young Handler Lookalike. Youngsters are encouraged to go along in fancy dress – and the dogs, too! This Class is scheduled to start at 2.20pm to give youngsters time to get their faces painted.
Don’t forget the winners of all classes will receive a voucher for a picture by official photographer, John Oliver, as well as a cup, rosette and prize.
Rosettes and prizes will also be awarded to 2nd, 3rd and 4th places.

Is your four-legged friend the photogenic type? The Algarve Resident, in association with APAA, is launching the ‘My Best Friend’ photo competition as part of the Scruffts 2011 event.
All you have to do is send us a high quality photograph of your dog(s), which will be put under public scrutiny on the day of the Scruffts event. A selection of the photos sent in by our readers will also be published regularly in the Algarve Resident up to the day of the event.
An independent panel of judges, including a professional photographer, will be voting for the three best photos in the photo competition at Scruffts.
Watch this space for more details including the fantastic prizes on offer!
Send your photographs (resolution around 2,000 pixels wide or high), including your full name and address, the name of the dog(s) and age(s) and why you think it should win, to Editor Inês Lopes by email [email protected].
