THE LANDMARK fountains in front of Lisbon’s Dona Maria II National Theatre, in Rossio Square, are out of order.
Restored to their former glory three years ago, the pump that sent water spurting from the mermaid’s water vessels has broken down.
Lisbon Câmara said last week that it had bought a new electrically-driven pump that would take time to adapt to the existing system in what could prove an onerous and drawn out task.
The council said it would continue to clean the water of algae and rubbish, but could not say when the fountains would be up and running again.
