An army truck was stoned in Lisbon last week after it ran over and killed a local man on his way to the supermarket.
Manuel Silva, 60, was crossing the road by the capital’s Regimento dos Transportes (military vehicle storage depot) when the Mercedes truck hit him, wrote Correio da Manhã.
Talking to the newspaper, the man’s niece Natalina Silva said: “I don’t know why the soldier escaped out of the window and no one came to help my uncle.”
Silva was attended where he lay but died later at Hospital de S. José.
Meantime, disgusted relatives who arrived at the scene began stoning the truck. A “strong unit” of PSP police was drafted in but no arrests were made.
An army source later told the newspaper that it regretted the incident and an inquiry had now been initiated. The PSP are also investigating and tested the driver for alcohol.
