Two Irish men were detained by police last week after attempting to buy Dakar Rally souvenirs with fake bank notes at the official merchandise tent in Belém, Lisbon.
Police confirmed that the fraudsters were caught thanks to a counterfeit money detection device being used by staff at the till.
Lisbon PJ were informed of the incident and will be conducting an investigation.
