Facing fines

THE STATE owned road construction and maintenance company, Estradas de Portugal (EP), will be forced to reduce the number of road deaths on a network of roads under its control by 2010 or face government fines.

This was a new addition to the contract which was presented to EP on Monday by Mario Lino, the Minister of public constructions.

The number of blind spots on the roads must also be reduced by 40 per cent by 2010, which means that within three years these will be reduced to 39.
