NEW YEAR in Portimão could give Albufeira’s annual celebrations a run for its money with 8.5 tons of fireworks to be blasted into the sky and a music line-up that promises to shake the ground.
During a 15-minute period, a total of 81,110 fireworks will light up the skies above Praia da Rocha and the riversides of Portimão and Alvor, across a six kilometre stretch.
At the Portimão riverside, popular Portuguese artist Avô Cantigas will be performing for children from 5pm and jugglers will also be entertaining the crowds. Flame throwers will also be performing along with around 100 percussionists from Tocá Rufar from 11pm. The band Pau d’Arara will take the stage after the fireworks display, which will be synchronised to music.
With a slightly different theme, Alvor riverside will have a reggae vibe with music from One Love Family, a band that was formed in 1999, from 11pm and flame throwers will also be on hand to heat up the night’s proceedings. After the fireworks display at midnight, Dixie Gang will jazz the riverside up and the Tocá Rufar percussionists will travel from their performance at the Portimão riverside earlier in the evening, to Alvor riverside.
Meanwhile, Praia da Rocha’s party kicks off at 11pm in Miradoura with flame throwers and music from Zambra. Snake charmers promise to also charm the audience before the fireworks begin and this will be followed by limbo dancing, salsa and music from Action Team, Tocá Rufar and a set by DJ Deelight.
Meanwhile, Albufeira’s Fishermen’s Beach (Praia dos Pescadores) promises one of the most animated events over New Year. The multimedia fireworks display promises to be the best yet and, according to the câmara, the fireworks will be launched from five different locations.
Prior to the fireworks display, David Fonseca will get the crowd going with music from his album, Dreams in Colour, which has already gone gold, from 10pm.
French DJ Bob Sinclair will be the main act for the evening and will take to the stage following the fireworks display. He will be playing some of his most popular hits including Love Generation, World Hold On, Rock this Party, and Give a Li’l Love from his album entitled Soundz of Freedom.
Lagos, Vilamoura, Vila Real de Santo António and other towns located along the Algarve coast will also have fireworks displays, musical entertainment and street performers.
