Expensive schooling

Families in Portugal are struggling to pay for school books and after school activities for their children.

Some centres providing after school activities such as judo, riding and swimming, charge as much as 400 euros a month.

However, the president of the national confederation of social solidarity institutions, Padre Lino Maia, advises parents to take into consideration their income and choosing “more reasonable” options.

“Many centres charge according to the parents’ monthly income, with many paying a minimum of 17 euros and a maximum of 100 euros,” he said.

The cost of a school book averages 23 euros, with each child needing an average of nine books per school year.
