Fernando Araújo, the doctor and former hospital administrator chosen to lead the new management body of Portugal’s State health service (SNS) has been officially appointed today, with the government approving the necessary resolution. According to a government statement, his mission is to coordinate the healthcare response of health units, ensuring their networked operation, the continuous improvement of access to healthcare, the participation of users and the alignment of clinical and health governance.” Critics have said this is essentially being tasked with doing what the health minister SHOULD be doing. The government believes however that this is the answer to the health service’s doldrums.
