Évora seniors contract Covid-19 after vaccinations

12 seniors at an old people’s home run by Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Èvora have become infected with Covid-19, 17 days after being vaccinated with their second shots. For the time being they are described as asymptomatic. Said the home’s director Francisco Lopes Figueira, the seniors “are perfectly covered by the vaccine” which “reduces the symptoms and the aggressivity of the illness” but does not stop people becoming infected, nor does it stop them being contagious. Said the World Health Organisation’s chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan last week it is important that people, even after they have been vaccinated, maintain all measures of protection (ie wear masks, keep physical distancing and frequently wash hands), as they could continue to transmit the virus ‘in spite of not becoming ill” themselves.
