Europol is described as ready to help Portugal if authorities here decide to investigate allegations of hate crimes levelled against right-wing party Chega. The complaints have originated from former MEP and presidential candidate Ana Gomes. Ms Gomes has also called on the Attorney General to declare Chega illegal, stressing it is a party that promotes violence and disunion overshadowed by suspicions of ‘international criminal connections’. Chega’s MP André Ventura has countered that Ana Gomes is trying to “asphyxiate politics in Portugal” – and that he hopes the Attorney General and other organs will “vehemently repudiate” her declarations.
