You may have driven past the Belém Cultural Centre recently and noticed a huge scaffolding tower, mushrooming up from ground level, and wondered what it is for. Well, it is the early stages of the construction of what is set to be the tallest Christmas tree in Europe. Standing some 62 metres in height – taller than the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy – the tree promises to be a spectacular sight. It will be lit with 2,000,000 lights and hold 17 kilometres of tube lighting. The fantastic display of lights on the tree will be switched on by the Presidents of the Lisbon Municipal Câmara and the Millennium Bank on November 19.
