Europe’s “biggest horse riding competition” returns to Vilamoura

It hasn’t even begun but organisers say it is already on track for being every bit as successful as the last event.

The Vilamoura Atlantic Tour 2016 will take place between Tuesday (February 16) and April 3 at the Vilamoura Riding Centre and is expected to live up to its reputation as “Europe’s biggest horse riding competition”.

Seen as a “much-needed boost” for Algarve tourism during the low season, the event will attract around 2,000 people, including 300 riders and 1,000 horses.

Last year, it brought around “€21 million-worth of business to the Algarve”, with five-star hotels and restaurants benefiting the most.

This year, the event’s prize money will be €800,000 and will feature 19 competitions counting for the Longines FEI Ranking, as well as three qualifiers for the 2017 European Championships and 2016 Olympics.
