Admittedly drawn in the very strong Group A of the competition, Portugal nevertheless disappointed by big-margin opening defeats against Italy and Spain. A 5-3 win over Hungary did nothing but salvage pride, as their conquerors progressed to the semifinals. World Champions Spain easily beat the Ukraine 5-0 and met Russia who overcame Italy 4-2 in the final. Spain triumphed 2-1 to add the European title to their world crown.
