In Germany, Bayern Munich were threatening to do a Chelsea – unbeaten so far, until the Bitburger brewery offered 10,000 litres of beer to the first team to do so. Hamburg obliged immediately, a 2-0 victory securing second place and the prize. Kevin Keegan’s old club are now only one point the runaway Bundesliga leaders with Bremen another point adrift.

In Italy, Juventus are continuing where they left off last season, making it four out of four against Udinese. Fiorentina and Palermo are the pursuers at this stage.

Lyon are on target for a fifth title in five years in France, John Carew scoring regularly. They are still to lose a game.

Surprise package Getafe and Celta Vigo are duelling for the league leadership in Spain. Barcelona and Madrid are struggling while Valencia look best of the rest although the Galacticos’ latest 2-0 win moves them into third.
