European operation recovers 48 Portuguese works of religious art

A Europol investigation, dubbed Operation Pandora, has recovered 48 Portuguese works of art, along with many others from various countries – including ancient books from Italy and more than 3,000 ancient coins. The Portuguese works were all stolen from churches in northern Portugal between 1992 and 2003 – a decade when churches suffered a wave of costly break-ins. This was the 7th edition of Pandora, taking place through 2022 involving 14 countries. In all 60 people have been arrested, and over 1,000 art works recovered.
