Celebrations involving more than 1,300 school children took place in the Algarve’s capital, Faro, to mark European No Cars Day last week.
In a day which saw traffic restrictions imposed in the historic centre and downtown Faro, there were three giant inflatable play areas for the borough’s primary school children to enjoy in the Jardim Manuel Bívar. The youngsters were treated to face painting, a cycling track with bicycles and pedal operated cars, rides in electric buggies and short journeys on an eco-friendly train. Faro Câmara President, José Vitorino, was on hand to greet the children and try out the alternative transport for himself, setting an example and raising awareness among the children of the environmental problems related to the excessive use of cars.
