EU with no opening for António Costa ‘just yet’…

It’s no secret that prime minister António Costa has his eyes on a plum job in Brussels once this Socialist government’s mandate comes to an end in 2023. Pundits suggest he’s gunning for the top job (president of the European Commission). But any chance that he will be getting his wish sooner rather than later has been scotched by ‘sources in Brussels’ who have told Expresso “it is too early to say”. Says Expresso: “The European story has shown that it is not dependant on wanting to get there. There is a series of variables that are hard to predict or negotiate. A number of them involving the weight of political families, geographic balances and even gender”.
