EU parliament due to vote this week on ‘free rail passes’ for 18-year-olds

Europe’s teens could be in for a golden opportunity on their 18th birthdays. EU leaders want to give them all a free Interrail pass valid for 30 European countries. The idea is to “reinforce the European sense of belonging”. The €1.5 billion plan developed following a speech by European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker in which he called for “greater cooperation within the EU”.

A vote is due to be taken this week.
