EU commission against piracy commanded by Portugal until its closure in December

Commodore Marcelo Correia will command the European Union’s Operation Atalanta – the naval force created to prevent piracy and trafficking in the Somali Basin – until December. In the 41st rotation of Operation Atalanta, six Portuguese Navy personnel are involved as well as soldiers from Spain, Italy, Serbia and Monte Negro, Republic of Korea, Colombia and Djibouti. The operation has, since March, seized around 12 tonnes of drugs – and since 2019 there hasn’t been one attack by pirates. This shows how effective Atalanta has been, says commodore Correia. The operation however comes to an end on December 2 after 14 years.
