EUROPEAN UNION leaders have agreed on a set of measures to fight global warming at a summit in Brussels chaired by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The plan sets out how the 27 member-countries will cut carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2020, compared with 1990 levels.
Other EU targets include cutting greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy and cutting energy consumption through improved energy efficiency, all by 20 per cent by the year 2020.
Approval by the European Parliament will mean that these measures could become law.
