Estrela hall raises its roof!

Lisbon’s long-established and prestigious English language theatre company, the Lisbon Players, is busy putting a new roof on its theatre building in Rua da Estrela in Lisbon’s charming Estrela district. This is the first phase of improvements that the company is planning for its 100-year-old building, which has been the company’s theatre since 1947.

The group is amateur and has no subsidy of any kind, either official or unofficial, and the money for the work has come entirely from audience support – ticket sales, support of Raise the Roof productions and individual donations. The restoration fund is still open if you want to make a donation for the second phase, which will involve improvements to the electrical installations and the back-stage areas, bar and auditorium.

The first act after the new roof is safely in place will be auditions for the next production – Shakespeare’s brilliant comedy about love and deception, Twelfth Night, which will open in November. The auditions will take place at the theatre in Rua da Estrela, 10, next to the old British Hospital – on Monday and Tuesday, September 27 and 28 from 8.30pm onwards. No preparation is necessary and auditions are open to anyone of any nationality. For further information call 964 475 745.
