The vast majority of the Portuguese (81%) agrees that immigrants should have the same rights as national citizens, a significantly higher figure compared to the European average (68%), according to a Eurobarometer released last week. There are 20.2 million immigrants from third world countries currently living in the European Union, representing a total of 4% of the 502.5 million Europeans. The study was released as part of an annual report on free movement of persons, asylum and immigration in 2011.
