Environmentalists are celebrating their first major victory in the battle against the “destruction” of Lagoa’s Alagoas Brancas wetland area. Mechanical diggers were stopped in their tracks today following an inspection carried out at the site.
Speaking for Lagoa Câmara (town hall), Carlos Alvo told us the decision boiled down to a “lack of licences”.
“The owners of the land apparently had permission to clear the land, but not for any other works that were being conducted. With all the exposure that this issue got in the media, an inspection was carried out (February 7) and the works were suspended,” he said.
The Resident has contacted APA for more information which we will publish when it comes available.
Meantime, protestors say their demonstration is still scheduled for Sunday (February 12) at 10am in front of Aldi supermarket.
“There are a lot of unanswered questions,” said campaigner Ana Blofeld. “We have to keep the pressure up to get answers.”
