Environment minister gets thumbs-down over social tariff gaff

Environment minister Jorge Moreira da Silva – already dubbed Public Enemy No 1 for trying to push through the demolition of hundreds of families’ homes – is yet again in hot water for the lack of success of the government’s pledge that 500,000 families would be helped this year with electricity bills. The reality is that the social tariff has been applied to just 50,000 families. Meantime, thousands more were cut-off with no help at all in accessing any form of tariff support.

In one of its regular “thumbs down” boxes, CM highlights the minister’s less than helpful admission that the government had not reached its goal.

Tacked over the tariff and how it works, Moreira da Silva suggested faults could lie in “insufficient communication and a deficient implementation of legislation on the ground”.
