English instructors have come to Portugal to train hospital staff at Porto’s Santo António General Hospital in how to respond effectively in disaster situations. The move is part of the National Medical Emergency Plan being put in place in preparation for the Euro 2004 football tournament. The training aims to prepare hospitals for disaster situations and public order disturbances, as well as road accidents. The plan revolves around an emergency support system that gives priority to patients whose injuries are most severe.
