ALL PORTUGUESE primary schools are expected to offer English lessons before 2009.
The promise was made by Prime Minister José Sócrates at the opening of the new school year on Thursday, September 12.
The English teaching programme started two years ago and only involved the older students at primary school levels.
In last academic year (2006/2007), more than half of the schools, some 2,534, already offered students from the first and second years the chance of attending English lessons as an extra activity.
