Four swimmers, described only as English holidaymakers, had to be plucked from the sea by maritime police in Tavira this week after strong waves and currents swept them out of their depths.
Two were understood to be assisted in hospital – but more for “precaution” than anything more serious.
The other two were rescued without the need for medical help.
As beaches everywhere start filling up with tourists, the so-called “época balnear” (bathing season) does not officially begin until June 1, and thus many beaches are still without lifeguards.
In Wednesday’s incidents, which took place near the Fuseta sandbank, a local boat is understood to have gone to the swimmers’ aid as well as maritime police, firemen and INEM.
