English Golf Union winter training camp

The Boavista Golf & Spa resort hosted two English Golf Union (EGU) regional teams, East Midlands and Thames Valley, in February for a week.

Blessed with sunshine during their stay, the some 60 participants filled the resort with the “exuberance of youth and a pleasant buzz all around was observed by all staff and guests,” said a spokesman for the resort.

The groups were accommodated at Boavista and Vila Galé hotel and practiced at both Boavista and Palmares in the western Algarve, which offered them varied and challenging holes to practice and enhance their golf skills.

Alex Saary, the U18 regional coach for Thames Valley and head golf coach of the Olympic Coaching Programme, said: “With over 20 players in our squad, we made great use of the gym, practice facilities, golf course and restaurant at Boavista. Thank you to everyone and we are already looking forward to returning next year!”

Neil Connelly of the English Golf Union, East Midlands Regional Manager was also happy with the outcome of the training work. He said: “Everyone in the team, squad members to specialists could not have enjoyed the week more. Thank you for the very special western Algarve hospitality, we will be back!”

Rodrigo Ulrich, golf director at Boavista Resort, said hosting the event had been “exciting and so rewarding to watch such quality golf” being played by the youngsters and looked forward to welcoming the teams next year.
