End Polio Now annual bike ride

Rotary Estoi Palace International, in association with Algarve Bike Holidays, is organising its third annual charity bike ride to benefit the End Polio Now Campaign on Sunday, November 19. Meeting point is the Estoi Palace Pousada at 9.30am. The ride will take around two hours and include the challenging São Miguel mountain peak.

Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five. The virus is spread from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system and, in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine. Cases have been reduced by 99.9% since 1988 through the vaccination programme.

“Unless polio is eradicated, within 10 years there could be as many as 200,000 new cases each year, all over the world. The disease is endemic in only three countries, but unless every child is vaccinated, no child is safe anywhere,” said a Rotary statement.

In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending polio and matches every dollar donated 2 to 1.
