Despite completing the double over Olímpico do Montijo with a 2-1 away win, Olhanense are consigned to at least another season in the third tier Campeonato de Portugal. Other results confirmed that the Olhão-based club – they were in the Primeira Liga just four years ago and finished eighth two years before that – cannot qualify for the play-offs.
A number of senior players were missing from the starting line-up including centre-back Ivo Nicolau and midfield general Leleco whilst former youth keeper Leandro Turossi replaced Cléber Santana between the sticks.
The record books will show that Olhanense scored in the third minute through Zé Turbo with Rodrigo Parreira adding the second just before the break. Cami pulled a goal back for Olímpico 10 minutes after the break.
Anniversary celebrations
SC Olhanense celebrates its 106th anniversary on April 27 and despite the frustration of not making the play-offs, it is hoped fans will gather to say farewell to the team as they finish their league programme with a home game against Estrela FC (Vendas Novas) on Sunday.
The day will commence at 10.30am with a mini Walking Football Tournament between teams from East Algarve Walking Football (Olhão and Tavira), Boa Vista Strollers (Lagos) and SC Olhanense Veterans.
A tour of the Olhanense Trophy Room will be followed by lunch and then the players will be the guests of the club for the main match at the José Arcanjo Stadium.
The East Algarve Walking Footballers have received two sets of full kit, kindly donated by the Hairy Lemon Poolside Bar, Cabanas Tavira.
On Monday, following a convivial lunch, players and partners presented a framed acknowledgement of gratitude to Lorraine and Clive Burke for their generous support.
