Emigrés returning to Portugal to receive up to €6,500

The government’s pledge to lure emigrés home to Portugal now has a clear ‘price tag’ attached to it: returning citizens can look forwards to incentives of up to €6,500 along with help with travelling expenses. This way Programa Regressar, starting next month and costing the State around €10 million, is hoping to persuade 1,500 work-age Portuguese back home by the end of the year to remake their lives.

Secretary of State for Employment Miguel Cabrita has admitted however that the programme, like every initiative like it, is “complex” – “with a history of difficulties” in that nationals aren’t prepared to make this kind of decision lightly.

The programme has been criticised by opposition parties for being populist and unlikely to succeed due to the career prospects, salaries and other aspects that returning home can imply.
