Tiny ‘Maria’ weighed only 2.6 kg when she was delivered on a packed Almada beach last Saturday, but the health worker whose expertise brought smiles all round has warned it could have gone the other way. “Beach access for the ambulance is not easy,” Gil Nunes told reporters afterwards. “I know the mother and daughter are well, but it could have gone very badly.”
As it is Maria and her mother Catarina are already expected to have been given the green-light to leave Almada’s Garcia da Orta hospital.
Gil Nunes was helped in his role as “midwife” by lifeguards, a bar worker, three firemen, maritime police and INEM rescue staff.
