A 20-YEAR-old Australian man who fell asleep at a level crossing while drunk miraculously cheated death after a train ran over him.

The evening reveller was fast asleep on a railway line near Port Augusta, South Australia, when a train driver suddenly spotted him.

The driver of the train slammed on the emergency brakes but could not stop the train, which was carrying 3,000 tonnes of freight, in time.

When the man finally woke up, he hit his head on the underside of the train and was transported to hospital with bruising.

Tony Aldridge, a rail spokesman, said: “The clearance under the train was only 11 inches and the man is lucky to be alive,” adding, “It was probably lucky he was lying in such a way that the train actually went over him rather than across him.”
