On February 11, the European Commission celebrated the first European 112 Day in recognition of the significant effort across Europe to synchronise emergency service response across member states.
Results of a Europe-wide survey on the 112 service to coincide with the celebrations revealed that 94 per cent of EU citizens found a single European emergency number useful.
112 is the emergency phone number that can be used free of charge from fixed or mobile phones and runs in conjunction with existing emergency numbers. In Portugal, 112 calls are answered on average in less than 21 seconds, with operators being able to pinpoint your location immediately.
However, operators were unable to offer any other European languages to users, an issue currently being assessed by the European Commission.
